About Us
Tucked beside the Humber River, St. John’s Cemetery on the Humber is a peaceful green space with deep roots in Toronto’s history. Spanning just over four acres, the property is lined with tall trees, gentle hills, and quiet paths—offering a beautiful place to pause, reflect, and feel connected to the past. Whether you’re visiting a loved one or simply taking in the surroundings, the space offers a sense of calm and history all in one.
The cemetery dates back to the early 1800s and sits on the original farm of Captain John Denison—one of the area’s first settlers. Still cared for by members of the Denison family today, it has remained privately maintained for over 200 years. It’s not just a resting place, but a living piece of Toronto’s story.
Welcoming Our Community
While St. John’s Cemetery on the Humber is privately owned and maintained by the Denison family, it remains open to the public as a quiet place for reflection, walking, and connection with nature. We welcome respectful visitors—including dog walkers, families, and history enthusiasts—to enjoy the peaceful surroundings.
To help everyone enjoy the space safely and thoughtfully, we ask that children be accompanied by an adult and that pets remain under the owners control and attended at all times. This helps ensure the grounds are cared for and that everyone can share in a peaceful experience.
All are welcome to visit but be mindful that you do so at your own risk.
Using the Space
We’re proud to be part of this vibrant neighborhood and to offer a green, quiet space where the community can gather, reflect, and reconnect with nature. Whether you’re passing through on a walk, revisiting family history, or simply seeking a peaceful moment, we’re honored to share this special place with you.
Visitor Guidelines
To help preserve the beauty and dignity of this historic site, we ask all guests to follow a few simple guidelines:
Please keep pets under control
Well behaved dogs are welcome, but owners must be in control at all times and clean up after them. If you can’t control your dog, they must be leashed at all times.
Respect the Monuments
Please supervise children and avoid touching or climbing on headstones, markers, or monuments.
Quiet During Services
If a funeral or private event is in progress, we kindly ask visitors to keep a respectful distance or return at a later time.
Keeping Our Grounds Beautiful Together
We rely on the generosity of our extended community to help preserve and maintain your cemetery’s grounds and heritage. If you value this shared space, please consider making a donation to support its ongoing care or volunteering your time.
