Rooted in Family History

Preserving our legacy since 1802.

Founded in 1802 by Captain John Denison, St. John’s Cemetery on the Humber is one of Toronto’s oldest and only family cemetery. Created as a private resting place on the original Denison homestead, it has become a lasting symbol of our family’s roots in the city. Today, descendants of the original founders continue to care for the land with pride—honoring the past while welcoming the community to share in its quiet beauty and reflection.

Governed with Tradition

Managed for the family –
by the family.

St. John’s Cemetery on the Humber was created when Capt John Denison’s infant daughter died. With no cemeteries nearby, he eventually allocated space on the family farm as a “burial ground”. When he passed, his will set the terms for a permanent cemetery. The Anglican church ran the cemetery for a while. In 1929, senior members of the family formed the Corporation of St John’s Cemetery on the Humber.

That corporation still exists today. It’s operated on behalf of the family by a Board of Directors made up of volunteer members of the family. The board meets formally twice a year and after the Annual General Meeting held in June each year.

Key Responsibilities

The ongoing care and preservation of St. John’s Cemetery on the Humber is guided by a volunteer Board of Directors, composed entirely of Denison family descendants. As stewards of this historic property, the Board brings a personal connection to the land and a deep respect for its legacy. Their role is not only to manage your cemetery’s day-to-day needs, but also to ensure its long-term sustainability as both a family burial ground and a peaceful public space. Through their efforts, your cemetery remains a meaningful place where history, memory, and community come together.

Property Stewardship

The Board oversees the maintenance and preservation of your cemetery’s landscape, infrastructure, and natural features. This includes ensuring that the grounds remain clean, safe, and reflective of your cemetery’s historical character.

Financial Oversight

Board members are responsible for managing donations and overseeing your cemetery’s financial health. They help plan for long-term sustainability while supporting current operating needs.

Management of Burials

The Board manages burial requests and coordinates interments in accordance with cemetery guidelines. They ensure that all arrangements are handled with care, dignity, and respect for family traditions.
